Nick Lives Out The Best Video Game Fantasies In His New Music Video

Now I knew the music video was going to be retro. We all did. He’d said so. The teasers that’d been posted made it beyond clear that it’d be inspired by video games. I’m not quite sure what I expected? But this hit me in every nerdy part of my soul. It made me laugh. It’s cheesy, it’s funny, it’s just so incredibly Nick. There’s nothing more refreshing than an artist who decides to be himself unapologetically and that’s really what we have here. Nick has said a million times that he’s just a regular guy that happens to be a performer. He’s joked about how he’s a nerd and loves stuff like old movies and video games. All of that shines through here. He comes in rocking the white suit we’ve come to recognize from his Who I Am tour. He starts playing an arcade game but then suddenly we’re immersed in it. We see nods to old school Mario where he’s chasing coins. We see him racing to win.

We even see nods to eighties movies like the car he’s driving, or to classic eighties music videos like Take On Me. I feel like we’re not only thrown into a time machine back into Nick’s childhood imagination, but into his personality in general. The best part me for me was watching him battling an evil version of himself, straight out of Street Fighter. It poked fun at himself and the concept, which made me think of 19 in 99. It’s goofy, it’s cheesy, it’s fun, and it’s adorable. He made the song he wanted to make, leaving it as the dedication to the fans. It makes sense that he made the video that he wanted to make with this, and you can just tell he had fun making this one happen. Isn’t that the best? When it’s not some carefully crafted image set to hit every PR suggestion? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, what I’m loving most about this tour, these new songs, this era is that we’re getting 100% Nick without a single substitution. He’s just being himself.

And I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Never change, Nick.
