Nick Carter’s New Song “Superman” Is Definitely Our Kryptonite

“Soon” has finally arrived everyone!

At least for Nick’s latest song that he’d been teasing on Instagram live sessions for week, Superman. This is yet another song with the producer Nick has been working with off and on since around mid 2021, Vic “Billboard Killer” Martin who gave us songs like ‘Scary Monster’, or ‘Easy’ and other songs that got previewed to fans at the album listening event they did here in Las Vegas. Now I’ve had the luck to have attended that and I do think the pair are a good match. Nick is an eclectic artist in many ways, loving all genres of music. Throughout his solo career he’s been trying to showcase that not only in his solo performances and toutrs, but in his discography as well. Martin, also seems to dabble in multiple genres which may be why this seems to be the producer Nick’s stuck with for the past few years.

My first thought on ‘Superman’ on my first listen? It’s country-esque but not quite country. It’s definitely more in the ballad section of pop and in my opinion it’s really nice to see from Nick. We haven’t seen anything in this vein since I’m Taking Off album. We didn’t get a strong, powerful midtempo with All American (post doing a deep dive on that album is in the works). There’s that build up to the chorus on the bridge, the way Nick allows his vocals to truly shine as he belts later on in the song. It’s really well done.

Sometimes the best Nick songs are the ones that are stripped down to simply let him do what he does best. Now that said, lyrically it’s obviously a love song. However, there’s a few lyrics that truly stood out to me, the way that several did back when ‘Scary Monster’ was released and you best believe I just double checked the writing credits on Amazon Music and yes, Nick helped write it.

Personally speaking I feel Vic brings the most truth out of Nick lyrically. I’d talked to him after the release of ‘Scary Monster’ after an After Party show in Phoenix, where he’d confirmed it to me when I’d asked if it was about mental illness, addiction, trauma and personal demons. Here we are again with some some seriously vulnerable lines if you take them apart piece by piece.

Depending on what part of the song you’re at, makes it interesting to picture what exactly he’s referencing. But let’s look at the lyrics that to me, really hit the hardest and gave me some serious pause. Read them below and if you’ve been around for awhile, you’ll probably know why and I don’t need to say it.

Now my fall from grace was just a little late to rescue you
Dodging the speeding bullets to get to you
I guess there’s nothing that I can do
But if I can take the criticism and the rocks aimed to hit ya
What if it doesn’t weaken me
I guess there’s nothing there left to prove

Now I’m exposed, my armor’s broke, can I still save the day?

Just let those words sink in and think. Nick even said on a live he planned to release more personal songs and I’m absolutely here for it. Music can heal and creating can be a power therapy. And to be honest, Nick has had his ups and downs, especially in the past year. So I know these lyrics hit down in the core just from the fan perspective who’s watched it all. He’s had quite the journey and it seems like he’s ready to work through it all using music and performing.

It makes me beyond proud of him.

I’m yours
I’m only human, but I’m yours
I never thought I was a superhero

When it comes down to it, Nick is human. He’s a person and so many people forget that and to me, I sort of interpret it about him being the pop icon that he is. And this part to me, is aimed at the world.People build him up into this superhero but really in the end, he’s only human. For now we only have a lyric video and this could just be my geeky side daydreaming, but wouldn’t it be neat if he did a music video as his interpretation of Clark Kent? I mean, the guy does like comics.

Picture Smallville, it’d definitely hit into the country vibe of the song.

I realize that’s unlikely. But a fan can dream, can’t she?

In any event, for those who may not be heavily into country the way I am, this really hits in the sweet spot. It’s not too far into that genre, just a hint. A taste, if you will while still giving us the Nick we know and love, just maybe, a little more exposed. If this is a preview of the songs he’s been recording this year then I can’t wait to hear the finished project. Also Nick if you happen to see this, feel free to have say…20 songs on that tracklist, we wouldn’t be mad.
