Nick Carter Channels His Clark Kent Side In His “Superman” Music Video

When I first heard the song Superman from Nick’s as of yet unreleased upcoming solo album, I immediately came to the same thoughts as I’m sure a lot of you did. Ideas of Nick in a skin tight red and blue suit, trying to save the world. And in my defense, it wasn’t that crazy of a thought. Nick’s a comic book fan, and it’s definitely something he’d do if given the opportunity and money. But instead, as usual, he decided to swerve left instead of right and gave us something simpler. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. Simple isn’t bad.

Sometimes it’s the best way to tell a story.

And the story is pretty straightforward.

The introduction to the video might be my favorite part. It’s a showcase of his Instagram. Showing the heights of which his career has taken him as a Backstreet Boy and simpler clips of his kids. Basically a showcase of everything, throughout the past year. A lot has happened, both good and not so good. The video then cuts into Nick on a call with his wife Lauren, who also reminds him of how hard he’s been working and to use this as a break. Something familiar to all fans since we know he can be a bit of a workaholic. Out in the middle of Wyoming, he’s stuck getting gas for his truck. He’s working on a house for him and his family. He’s playing the guitar out on a tiny little pier. And to me, the message here is pretty simple though Nick does talk about it too with ET. This is the Clark Kent of Nick. The “Superman” we know is the pop idol, absolutely larger than life.

But there’s always more than one side to someone.

And there’s more than one way to be a superhero.

In many ways Nick doing anything he can for his family, is heroic. Just as heroic as anything you see on stage. A superhero doesn’t need to be super flashy or anything like that. It can be the every day things, the way someone is just there for you no matter what. Clark Kent is just as important as Superman, it’s just that less people recognize it and appreciate it. The so call boring things, are what matter in many ways more than anything exciting. And that’s the thing, his family sees the hero in Nick, not Nick Carter the Backstreet Boy. I think that’s part of what he’s trying to show here.

If you overanalyze like I like to, by repairing a house, he’s repairing after everything life has thrown at him in the past year. He’s rebuilding and showing everyone he’s still here. That you can come back from the lows. It’s going back to the foundations of what keeps him going and starting again. In a way, isn’t that what he’s doing right now with his music? And the repair work isn’t easy, in the videos it shows the trials and erros in fixing it up. Just like in real life. Nothing is perfect, not even Nick Carter and he’ll be the first to tell you so. But in the end, it’s nice to have him remind us he’s more than just a world famous singer in the biggest boyband in history. That he’s a person, that he’s a human. It hits the message of the song itself very well while also in a very subtle way acknowledges everything in the recent past. It’ll be very interesting to see what more awaits us when it comes to future singles and the solo album to come.

And on a lighter note….

Who knew that Nick could make singing in the middle of a giant field holding a gas can look good?

  1. I love the message that was transmitted to me when I watched the video, we are houses under construction with many pending repairs, but every day we are a better version of ourselves.
