As I’ve said before, I heard this song last year – well, part of it anyway.
Because of that, I went in with a few expectations. Nothing bad or crazy, but I already knew this was going to be something calmer and pretty in its simplicity. I think that’s probably my favorite part. This song is soothing, like a gentle blanket your loved one drapes around you for comfort. I’ve said before I’ve been craving a true-blue power ballad in the veins of “Falling Down”, and that’s still true. At the same time, this doesn’t take away from the fact this song fills a need too.
I might have a hard time (for once) explaining my thoughts but bear with me on this one.
I think we’ve all had some tragedy in our lives, most of us who are fans of Nick Carter are Millennials. I know that’s not true for everyone but I can confidently say most of us are. That means the majority of us are in our thirties and forties at this point. We’ve all had our ups in downs. I know that’s why I find it so easy to connect to this song. This is a song that acknowledges the pain that comes with life, that comes with living. There’s going to be pain, that’s a reality. This song also carries a message of hope that the pain is worth it for all the sweet moments that come along with it. You can turn away but then you miss out on all the love life can bring too.
I know love isn’t perfect
Yeah but I know, I know
Without it life isn’t worth it
Yeah but I know, I know
I know that I wanna feel everything
Even if the beauty comes with pain and tragedy
I know love isn’t perfect
Yeah but I know, I know
It’s worth the risk for me
Love Life and Tragedy
Nick had said this song was really the theme of the album and beyond the obvious fact it’s titled the same as the album, this song really does bring it all together. Because that’s how life is, it bundles love and tragedy together. It’s a theme that ran throughout the album, that light can’t exist without dark. It may hurt, it may crush you, but then it makes those brighter moments so much sweeter when they come around. This is a song of strength, that’s why I feel it’s so soothing. I really love the lyrics on this one because they’re just so honest.
Because when you think about it, when you look back to those darker moments… would you go back and ensure you never had that love in your life? Whether it was family, friends, or romantic, would you go back and keep it from ever existing if it prevented the pain? Knowing that you would be sacrificing all those happy and beautiful memories as well? That’s the thing, with those great loves, you wouldn’t. The journey was filled with joy and with pain, but I know for me – I would do it all again. To give it up to prevent the idea of pain and tragedy means a life that’s numb and meaningless. For anyone who knows Nick’s journey, we know this rings true for him.
And one thing I really enjoy about Nick’s music with this current era is that you can take it in multiple ways and multiple layers. You can take it at the surface level and apply it to romantic love, or you can dig into it a little deeper. You can connect to it in a different way. With “Love Life Tragedy”, Nick continues to take us on a journey with his music, while allowing himself to stay vulnerable along the way. It really shows his growth as an artist, away from the Backstreet Boys.
It’s worth the risk for me
